Traveling WiTH KIDS

This past week we experienced our second cruise as a family of six so I thought it would be helpful to share some tips incase you decide to cruise with your family. First off let’s start by saying cruises are tailor-made for families —offering a blend of relaxation, adventure, and convenience. Most cruise lines now cater specifically to families with large staterooms, kid-friendly dining, and extensive entertainment options. Whether it’s water slides, kids’ clubs, or live shows, there’s something for everyone.

Key Tips for Cruising with Multiple Kids

Now whether you have one kid or multiple like myself it can seem extremely overwhelming with planning the perfect vacation for YOUR family…

Numero Uno Choose the Right Cruise Line

This is so important because some cruise lines are better suited for families than others. Here are a few popular ones:

Disney Cruise Line: The ultimate choice for young families, featuring character meet-and-greets, Broadway-style shows, and family-friendly dining. ($$$)

Royal Caribbean: Known for its expansive ships with activities like rock climbing, ice skating, and even surfing simulators. ($$)

Carnival Cruises: A budget-friendly option with a lively atmosphere and activities for all ages. ($)

Norwegian Cruise Line: Offers flexible dining and accommodations, perfect for families needing flexibility. ($$)

So far we have cruised both Norwegian and Royal Caribbean and in my honest opinion Royal Caribbean seemed to have more activities and entertainment for kids and teens of all ages.

Book the Right Accommodation

For me, with four kids, your stateroom setup matters. Look for family suites, connecting rooms, or cabins with pull-down bunks and sofa beds. Some cruise lines even offer multi-room suites designed specifically for large families. Booking early can ensure you secure the best options with the best pricing.

What to Expect Onboard

From the moment you step onboard, cruise lines offer so many activities whether its by the pools, or main entertainment. Many cruises feature:

Daily Entertainment: From Broadway-style shows to movie nights under the stars.

Interactive Activities: Family game shows, scavenger hunts, and dance parties (themed nights).

Pools and Water Parks: Often a favorite for kids, complete with slides and splash zones.

Make the Most of Kids’ Clubs

For those days you want to get away from the kids, Cruise lines typically offer age-appropriate kids’ clubs that cater to different age groups. These are free and staffed by trained professionals. It’s a win-win: kids make friends and engage in activities while parents enjoy some downtime. Ive done this twice now on both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian and I can honestly say the staff makes things extremely seamless and insure that your child feels comfortable and safe at all times.

Pack Smart

Last but not least it is CRUCIAL to pack smart not ( OVER PACK )

Packing for a family of six can be overwhelming. I made the mistake in overpacking our first cruise line and suggest to not over think. To be frank, you're often spending time by the pools or going to dinner so you don’t wear as many outfits as you may think, and if in fact you do need to rewear or wash something, many cruises offer laundry service. Below is a checklist to help stay organized:

  1.  Essentials: Clothes, swimsuits, and shoes for various activities ( sneakers sandals & a pair of dress shoes).

  2. HATS & Portable fans ( depending on where your traveling too ) it gets pretty hot help keep the kids cool and beat the heat

  3. Sunscreen

  4. Seasickness Remedies ( they also have ones for kids )

  5. Life Jackets ( if kids need them ) be sure to check with your cruise line to see what they offer and if this is already provided

  6. *Also when you’re traveling with young kids pack a thermometer and Tylenol as a just incase to keep your mind at ease.

  7. Water Bottles ( you are allowed refillable water bottles ) and on most ships case of water

  8.  Travel-sized laundry detergent (for spills) & wipes

Pro tip* pack a STROLLER: A small foldable stroller is MANDATORY when traveling with kids under 5. Cruise ships are HUGE and there little legs will get tired ( +so will your arms from carrying them )

Final Thoughts

Cruising with kids is an adventure your family will cherish for years. With the right planning, it can be an stress-free way to explore the world together. Focus on making memories, and don’t sweat the small stuff. After all, the joy of cruising is that there’s always something fun just around the corner—whether it’s the next port of call or family karaoke.
